The Ice Tower

The Ice Tower (La Tour de glace, 2025) is available to watch online: a French-German-Italian fantasy drama directed by Lucile Hadzihalilovic, starring Marion Cotillard.

The 1970s. Fifteen-year-old Jeanne runs away from an orphanage and stumbles onto a film set — an adaptation of The Snow Queen is in production. The actress playing the Queen, Cristina, is every bit as cold and magnetic as the fairy-tale character. Something pulls Jeanne in: fascination first, then something harder to name. Clara Pacini plays Jeanne opposite Cotillard; August Diehl also appears.

Hadzihalilovic works slowly by design — the same slow-burn, under-the-skin unease ran through her 2015 feature Evolution. The Ice Tower isn't plot-driven; it is atmosphere: the feeling that a girl has walked into a story and cannot find the exit. European arthouse at its most deliberately hypnotic.
