A Red Army border guard on the Soviet-Chinese frontier survives an attack that by rights should have killed him. He decides on the spot to trade the rifle for a monk's robe. The path to enlightenment turns out to require more fights — literal ones — than he bargained for. At each stop he must prove to village elders, fellow novices, and himself that he can be the man he chose to be. Sarnet wraps a deadpan martial-arts comedy in dry Eastern-European absurdism.
