A Vatican priest unearths what appears to be the original handwritten manuscript of the Divine Comedy. A mob boss wants it acquired. Writer Nick Tosches — a character drawn from the real author of the 2002 source novel — steals it. Meanwhile the film cuts to 14th-century Florence, where Dante is still hunting for the words, unaware that seven hundred years on, men will be killing over that notebook.
