About

Synopsis

The Blue Bird (1976) — a Soviet-American fantasy film you can watch online on iFILM, directed by George Cukor and featuring Elizabeth Taylor, Jane Fonda, Ava Gardner, Cicely Tyson, and Margarita Terekhova.

Based on Maurice Maeterlinck's 1908 stage fable, the film follows peasant children Mytyl and Tyltyl as they travel through magical kingdoms — the Land of the Past, the Kingdom of the Future, the Night — accompanied by the spirits of Light, Fire, Bread, and Water, alongside the family dog and cat brought to life. Each stop promises the legendary Blue Bird of Happiness. Each time it slips away.

Shot at Lenfilm studios in Leningrad, this was one of the very few Hollywood-Soviet co-productions of the Cold War era — a circumstance that made the cast possible and the logistics extraordinary. George Cukor, who directed My Fair Lady and Gaslight, brought together performers who had never shared a screen before and never would again. The fairy tale's quiet point — that what you travel far to find was near you all along — carries an extra weight once you know what it cost to make this film. Stream The Blue Bird (1976) on iFILM.
