Young Cossack Roman Ulybin starts the story with one problem: whether his sweetheart Dashutka will marry him or a merchant's son. Fistfights, village festivals. Then the country fractures — some men ride for the revolution, others against it, and Roman can no longer stand apart. The cast includes Vitaly Solomin, Yuri Solomin, and Vasily Shukshin — the writer-actor who became one of the defining figures of Soviet culture — here several years before his own work as a director.
