Synopsis
No Man's Land (无人区, 2013), directed by Ning Hao, is a Chinese western-crime thriller you can watch online on iFILM. Xu Zheng plays Pan Xiao, a sharp city lawyer who treats the legal system as a precision instrument — until the desert makes all his expertise useless.
Pan flies to a remote village in northwestern China to defend a falcon poacher. He wins. The poacher hands over his car as payment. The drive home through the desert should take a day. It does not. Past the last cell tower, Pan discovers that knowing the law is not the same as surviving it — and that the men he has crossed do not settle disputes with contracts. Huang Bo and Yu Nan complete a triangle of characters, each trapped in a different kind of corner.
Ning Hao shot the film in 2009 across the deserts of Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia, but Chinese censors held it back for four years. When it finally opened in 2013, audiences responded. Yu Nan's performance as a woman stranded at the edge of the wilderness is the film's most unsettling element — the desert has its own rules. Stream No Man's Land (2013) online on iFILM.
