City of God: The Fight Rages On (2024) picks up two decades after the landmark 2002 Brazilian film — watch it online on iFILM. Alexandre Rodrigues returns as Buscapé, the kid with the camera who made it out and built a life as a photographer.
The series is set in the early 2000s, back inside Cidade de Deus, the Rio de Janeiro housing project that became synonymous with the war between drug traffickers, police, and armed militias. Buscapé documents the neighborhood he grew up in — and finds that documenting violence is not the same as escaping it. The original film landed four Oscar nominations and reshaped how world cinema looked at Brazil's favelas; this sequel arrives as a Globoplay series and is slower by design, built for the long form.
The tagline — "some things don't change, even after 20 years" — is the show's thesis. The cycle it depicts has not broken. The series is less interested in kinetic set pieces than in what prolonged exposure to that cycle does to people who never had the option to leave. Stream City of God: The Fight Rages On on iFILM.
