Synopsis
The Mudge Boy (2003) is an independent drama from director Michael Burke that you can watch online on iFILM. It gave Emile Hirsch his first leading role as Duncan Mudge, a withdrawn fourteen-year-old on a remote Vermont farm reeling from his mother's sudden death.
Duncan's grief takes an unsettling shape. He borrows her voice, copies her gestures, wears her old fur coat and clings to her belongings as if she might come back through them. His father Edgar (Richard Jenkins) wants to mold the boy into a farmer and an heir, yet barely understands him at all. Local teens torment the odd kid — until one of his tormentors, Perry, drifts into a closeness that stirs something Duncan is still afraid to name.
This is quiet, uncomfortable cinema about adolescence, isolation and an identity just beginning to surface, with none of the usual gloss. Hirsch and Tom Guiry play it spare and exact, and the ending lands harder than a film this small has any right to. Stream The Mudge Boy (2003) online on iFILM.
