Synopsis

Watch Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown Season 9 online on iFILM — eight episodes, CNN, 2017.

The season's defining episode is Antarctica: Bourdain becomes the only major food-travel host to film there, spending time with scientists and U.S. base contractors at the coldest, driest continent on earth. The food is functional, institutional — and he shoots it with the same attention he would bring to a Michelin kitchen. The other seven episodes range across Los Angeles through its Latino neighborhoods (downtown Oaxacan restaurants, Pasadena quinceañeras), the immigrant food universe of Queens ridden via the No. 7 subway line, Basque pintxos in San Sebastian with Juan Mari Arzak, Laos still carrying unexploded American ordnance from the 1960s war, Oman, Trinidad's carnival-and-colonialism food culture, and Porto with Bourdain's former boss Jose Meirelles.

Six continents in eight episodes — the show's broadest geographic sweep. The Antarctica episode alone is unlike anything else in food television. Stream Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown Season 9 online on iFILM.
