Synopsis

Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, Season 5 — watch online on iFILM, 8 episodes on CNN (2015). The run opens with a structural experiment: the South Korea episode is cut in reverse chronological order, beginning at the farewell meal and working backward to arrival.

After that, nearly every stop comes with a different companion. Miami with Iggy Pop as a local guide. Glasgow — Bourdain calls it one of his favourite European cities, partly for the knife defense class. Madagascar with Darren Aronofsky: "unspoiled paradise or preview of how things end?" New Jersey, his childhood state, with his brother Chris at the roadside joints they grew up on. Budapest filtered through the life of Hungarian-born cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond. Hawaii as locals actually know it — not the version eight million tourists see — with Paul Theroux. Beirut closes the season: no war this time, just the nightlife and the food the city is legendary for.

Of all five seasons, this one plays with form the most freely. Stream all episodes of Season 5 online on iFILM.
