American Buffalo

American Buffalo (1996) is a screen adaptation of David Mamet's stage play — watch online on iFILM. Dustin Hoffman, Dennis Franz, and Sean Nelson play three Chicago dead-enders who cook up a plan to steal a rare Buffalo nickel from a local coin collector.

Mamet wrote the original play in 1975, and it runs entirely on talk: no action, one room, three men circling each other with suspicion and grievances that keep shifting. Hoffman is stripped-down and sharp — all edges, no performance — exactly what Mamet requires. Director Michael Corrente respects the material enough to leave it mostly alone.
