Synopsis
Eugénie Grandet (2021) is a French period drama you can watch online on iFILM, adapted by Marc Dugain from the novel by Honoré de Balzac. The setting is Saumur in the early 1800s, where one obsessively frugal man rules a quiet household.
Félix Grandet sits on an enormous fortune and tells no one. His wife and daughter live in plain rooms and counted candles, while suitors circle the lovely Eugénie hoping for both her hand and a share of money the old man guards like a wound. Then his nephew arrives — a ruined Parisian dandy, newly orphaned and far too charming. For the first time, Eugénie wants something her father cannot price.
Joséphine Japy plays the daughter and Olivier Gourmet the miser, and the film lives in the silence between them: greed on one side, a first love on the other. It's slow, chamber-sized cinema, made for viewers who prefer a tightening psychological grip to plot fireworks. Stream Eugénie Grandet (2021) online on iFILM.
