Synopsis
The Scopone Game (Lo scopone scientifico, 1972) is an Italian tragicomedy from Luigi Comencini, available to watch online on iFILM. Every year on the same day, a dirt-poor Roman couple, Peppino and Antonia, wait for a rich old American woman to arrive from across the ocean.
A devoted card player, the old woman sits down once a year to play scopone with her paupers — and she's the one who lends them the stake, since they're too broke to put anything on the table themselves. The rule is cruel and simple: no one can remember her ever losing. Peppino and Antonia keep believing that this time the cards will finally turn their way.
Alberto Sordi and Silvana Mangano play a couple whose hope long ago hardened into addiction, facing Hollywood legends Bette Davis and Joseph Cotten as the visitors from abroad. Under the guise of a gambling comedy, Comencini deals out a savage parable about class, where wealth always keeps the winning hand. The ending lands like a slap.
