In the late summer of 1943, Italy abruptly quits the war and the army falls apart overnight. Lieutenant Alberto Innocenzi, played by Alberto Sordi, leads a shrinking band of soldiers on a long trek across the country toward home, just as the German allies of yesterday turn into hunters. The journey becomes a string of encounters — comic, frightening, heartbreaking — with a nation that no longer knows whose side it is on.
