Hold That Ghost

Hold That Ghost (1941) is a Universal horror-comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Abbott and Costello play Chuck and Ferdie, a pair of hapless service station attendants who inherit a gangster's roadhouse — the place where he supposedly stashed all his money — without being told about the other people also looking for it.

The house delivers on its premise: flickering candles, moving objects, and enough apparently supernatural incidents to keep Costello frightened for most of the runtime, which is exactly where the best physical comedy lives. Joan Davis provides additional comic relief; Evelyn Ankers handles the straight-faced horror side; the Andrews Sisters fit two musical numbers into the proceedings without anyone stopping to explain why.
