Synopsis
Bud Abbott and Lou Costello Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff (1949) is a slapstick comedy-horror you can watch online on iFILM. Director Charles Barton followed the duo's Frankenstein smash with another monster-adjacent romp, this time dropping Karloff into the role of a hypnotizing swami at a luxury hotel.
Costello's bellhop Freddie gets pinned for a murder he had nothing to do with. Karloff's swami tries to put him under and wring out a confession — only Freddie turns out to be too dim for hypnosis to take hold. The hotel's corrupt management bungles one assassination attempt after another, Abbott plays the lone voice of reason amid the chaos, and Karloff — working cheerfully against his horror-icon image — lands some of the film's driest laughs.
It is lighter than the Frankenstein picture and leans harder on Costello's physical clowning, but the formula holds. Stream it online on iFILM.
