Synopsis
Ten Canoes (2006) is available to watch online on iFILM — an Australian drama-comedy directed by Rolf de Heer and co-director Peter Djigirr, shot entirely in the Yolngu language of Arnhem Land. Every actor is Indigenous; many had never stood in front of a camera before.
Long before Europeans arrived in the Northern Territory, a young hunter named Yeeralparil has quietly fallen for one of his older brother's wives. To talk him out of it, an elder reaches back to the mythological past — a story about a missing woman and how that small absence unravelled a community through jealousy, accusation and revenge.
De Heer and Djigirr took the Cannes Jury Prize in 2006 for a film spoken in a language understood by only a few thousand people on earth. What makes it travel is the dry humour running underneath: the setting is ancient, the foolishness is entirely recognisable. Watch Ten Canoes (2006) online on iFILM.
