Synopsis
Morris from America (2016) is a coming-of-age dramedy you can watch online on iFILM. Thirteen-year-old Morris moves with his widowed father from the States to Heidelberg, Germany, where he is the only Black kid around — and the only one obsessed with hip-hop in a town that runs on EDM.
Morris wants to rhyme like Biggie, barely speaks German, and fits in nowhere. Then he meets Katrin, a reckless 15-year-old classmate he will do anything to impress. Running alongside is his bond with his dad Curtis (Craig Robinson), a single father feeling his way through parenthood one clumsy talk at a time. Those scenes are the heart of the film.
Director Chad Hartigan keeps it small and lets newcomer Markees Christmas carry the load, while Robinson reveals a warmer, quieter register than his comedies. It took the screenwriting award at Sundance, and Robinson earned a separate jury prize for his performance. One for fans of low-key indies about the awkward years.
