Synopsis
Blood Wedding (Bodas de sangre, 1981) is a Spanish dance film you can watch online on iFILM. Director Carlos Saura and choreographer Antonio Gades stripped Federico García Lorca's tragedy to its bones: a rehearsal space, the full company of Gades' flamenco troupe, and no sets, no costumes, no theatrical framing.
The plot — a bride who runs from her wedding toward a former lover, and the blood that follows — is carried entirely through movement. Saura's camera stays close. Breath, the sharp crack of heels on wood, and the silences between steps do the work that words would do in any other film.
This was the first of Saura's flamenco trilogy, followed by Carmen (1983) and El amor brujo (1986). It holds up as one of the most direct arguments for what dance can do that acting can't. Stream Blood Wedding online on iFILM.
