Synopsis
The Count of Monte Cristo (Le Comte de Monte-Cristo, 1954) is a French-Italian adventure you can watch online on iFILM. Director Robert Vernay adapted Alexandre Dumas' novel at full length — three hours that track Edmond Dantès from his arrest to the final reckoning with every man who put him behind bars.
Framed by men he called friends, the young sailor is locked away in the island fortress of Château d'If. Years pass. He meets the elderly Abbé Faria, who dies there and leaves him two things: a route out and the whereabouts of a buried fortune on the isle of Monte Cristo. Dantès resurfaces in Paris as a count — wealthy, unrecognizable, in no hurry at all.
Jean Marais brings an athletic physicality and a controlled stillness to the role; his Monte Cristo is a man whose anger has cooled into something more methodical and thus more unsettling. The 183-minute runtime earns its length — Vernay gives the revenge its proper cadence, and the patience pays off. Stream The Count of Monte Cristo (1954) online on iFILM.
