Synopsis
A French Gigolo (Cliente, 2008) is a French drama you can watch online on iFILM. Writer-director Josiane Balasko, who also plays the lead, approaches a subject most films either mock or sensationalize: a composed, well-off woman in her fifties who hires male escorts, and what happens when one of those arrangements stops being transactional.
The man she meets is Patrick — in real life Marco, a construction worker quietly funding his wife's hairdressing salon. He keeps the two worlds separate until Judith falls for him, and Fanny finds out. Balasko holds the film at eye level with everyone involved rather than passing judgment. Isabelle Carré and Nathalie Baye round out a quietly assured cast. This is the kind of adult drama French cinema does well — clear-eyed about desire, unsentimental about consequences.
