Synopsis
Cherry Blossoms (Kirschblüten - Hanami, 2008) is a German drama by Doris Dörrie you can watch online on iFILM. When Trudi learns her husband Rudi is dying, she takes him to Berlin to visit their grown children — who suspect nothing. Rudi himself has no idea either.
The kids greet their parents politely and in a hurry; everyone has a life that leaves little room for aging parents. Trudi always dreamed of Japan — of Butoh dance, of Mount Fuji, of the blossom season — yet never made the trip. Then the story turns somewhere no one planned, and Rudi has to learn to see the world the way she did.
Dörrie drew openly on Ozu's Tokyo Story for this quiet film about how late we notice the people closest to us. Elmar Wepper plays a tight-lipped Bavarian left alone with grief in an unfamiliar city, and a young street dancer named Yu (Aya Irizuki) becomes his unlikely guide. No swelling melodrama, no tidy lesson — just something deeply human. Stream Cherry Blossoms (2008) online on iFILM.
