Synopsis
Soul Kitchen (2009) is Fatih Akin's warm-hearted comedy-drama, ready to watch online on iFILM. Zinos, a Greek-German chef in Hamburg, runs a half-dead diner on the wrong side of town, where the menu fits on a single sheet and regulars order without looking.
Then everything caves in at once. His girlfriend moves to Shanghai, a slipped disc leaves him barely able to stand, and his ex-con brother Illias keeps turning up on prison day-release. In a moment of desperation Zinos hires a hot-headed gourmet cook (Birol Ünel) who transforms the greasy spoon into a buzzing hotspot — except the loyal old crowd hates the fancy plates, and a property developer is circling the land. Adam Bousdoukos and Moritz Bleibtreu lead the cast.
Akin trades the heavy themes of his earlier work for something loose, loud and generous, scored by a terrific soul and funk soundtrack that keeps the whole thing dancing. It picked up the Special Jury Prize in Venice. Stream Soul Kitchen (2009) online on iFILM.
