Synopsis
Cat People (1942) is Jacques Tourneur's black-and-white horror landmark, free to watch online on iFILM. Irena, a Serbian fashion artist, meets engineer Oliver at a Manhattan zoo. A quick courtship, a wedding, and then the trouble starts.
Irena carries a fear from her village back home: give in to passion or jealousy, she believes, and she will turn into a panther and tear apart the man she loves. Oliver chalks it up to nerves and sends her to a psychiatrist. But as he drifts toward his colleague Alice, something stalks the shadows of an empty pool and a darkened stairwell. Simone Simon plays Irena as a woman you pity and dread in the same breath.
This was the first of producer Val Lewton's celebrated RKO chillers, and it rewrote the rulebook: you barely see the creature, because the terror lives in shadow, sound, and what your own eye fills in. Tourneur staged the original "bus" scare here, a jolt that filmmakers have borrowed ever since. If you are tired of horror that drowns the screen in blood, this quiet, suggestive film is a reminder that imagination cuts deeper. Stream Cat People (1942) online on iFILM.
