Synopsis
The Love Witch (2016) is a 1960s-styled horror comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Anna Biller wrote, directed, edited and scored it herself, and designed the costumes and sets on top of that.
Elaine (Samantha Robinson), a young witch, moves to a small California town with a single goal: to find a man who will love her completely. She reaches for potions, rituals and a carefully rehearsed kind of femininity. The trouble is that her chosen men can't survive that much devotion. One after another they crack or simply die, and Elaine just moves on to the next, blurring the line between love and obsession a little further each time.
Shot on 35mm in lush Technicolor hues, every frame looks like a glossy magazine spread crossed with a Hammer horror. Under the candy-colored retro surface, Biller hides a sharp satire of male fantasy and the roles women perform. It's not for everyone: slow, ironic, visually hypnotic.
