Synopsis
The Suicide Shop (Le Magasin des suicides, 2012) is a pitch-black animated musical you can watch online on iFILM. In a gray, hopeless city, the Tuvache family has run the same little store for generations, selling everything a desperate customer might need for a final exit: ropes, poisons, ceremonial blades, all with a cheerful smile.
Business thrives until their youngest, Alan, is born. The problem is simple: the boy is hopelessly, infuriatingly happy. He grins at customers, hands out reasons to live, and quietly sabotages the family trade from inside. His parents are appalled that one joyful child could bankrupt a shop built on misery.
Directed by Patrice Leconte and adapted from Jean Teulé's novel, this is hand-drawn animation set to song, laced with dry French wit. At a brisk 79 minutes, it swings between grim and oddly tender.
