About

Synopsis

Tidal Wave (해운대, 2009) is a South Korean disaster movie from director Yoon Je-kyoon, available to watch online on iFILM. It unfolds on Haeundae Beach in Busan, a packed summer resort that draws millions every year. Local fisherman Man-sik still carries the guilt of an earlier tsunami that took his friend, and he can't bring himself to propose to the woman he loves.

While the city enjoys an ordinary holiday season, an ocean scientist spots readings no one wants to believe: a mega-tsunami is forming offshore. His warnings get brushed aside as alarmism, even as the clock runs down to minutes. The film braids several stories together — the fisherman and his sweetheart, the scientist reconnecting with his ex-wife and daughter, a rescue worker chasing a wealthy city girl — then drops one catastrophe on all of them. It opens almost as a comedy of small lives before flipping into a desperate scramble for higher ground.

Yoon's film became one of the biggest Korean box-office hits of its era. It's a spectacle with a pulse, made for viewers who want real people standing under all that water. Stream Tidal Wave (2009) online on iFILM.
