Synopsis
A Paris cathedral in December, a dead choir conductor with both eardrums burst — that's the opening of Miserere (La Marque des anges, 2013), a French-Belgian thriller you can watch online on iFILM. It's adapted from Jean-Christophe Grangé's bestselling novel.
On the case is Lionel Kasdan (Gérard Depardieu), a cop on the brink of retirement who happens to worship at that very church. He's joined by Volokine (Joey Starr), a jittery officer from the minors' protection unit carrying his own private wreckage. The two loners untangle a string of killings that leads back to boys who vanished from church choirs and to a secret organization hiding behind the Latin psalm "Miserere." The deeper they dig, the bloodier it gets, and the further the rot reaches into the past.
Director Sylvain White keeps the tone cold and gothic: a frozen city, pipe organs, vaulted stone, violence with no varnish. Thierry Lhermitte and Marthe Keller fill out the supporting cast. It isn't a flawless mystery, but it's a solid grim noir for fans of European Grangé adaptations and the odd pairing of a weary Depardieu with a twitchy Starr. Stream Miserere online on iFILM.
