Synopsis

Sunset (Napszállta, 2018) is László Nemes' period drama you can watch online on iFILM. The year is 1913, the city is Budapest, and twenty-year-old Írisz Leiter has come back to the hat shop once owned by her dead parents, hoping to be taken on as a milliner.

The current owner greets her coldly and tells her to leave. She stays instead, and learns she has a brother nobody ever mentioned. The search pulls her into the underside of an imperial capital on the brink of collapse: behind the gleaming storefronts and lavish hat salons run whispers of violence, secret circles and spilled blood. The camera rarely leaves Írisz's face, so the viewer knows only what she knows and gropes through the same fog of half-answers. Juli Jakab carries the lead, with Vlad Ivanov in support.

This is Nemes' follow-up to the Oscar-winning Son of Saul, shot in the same signature style: long takes, a blurred and restless background, dread that keeps mounting. The Hungarian-French co-production screened in competition at Venice. It is demanding and deliberately disorienting, made for viewers ready to surrender to slow, atmospheric art cinema rather than a tidy plot. Stream Sunset (2018) online on iFILM.
