A Man

A Man (ある男, 2022) is a Japanese mystery drama you can watch online on iFILM. Lawyer Akira is approached by former client Rie: her husband died in a sawmill accident, and at the funeral his estranged brother took one look at the photo and said the dead man was not their Daisuke at all.

Akira agrees to find out who the husband really was — the man Rie had quietly, happily built a life with. The trail leads to a borrowed name, swapped papers and a hushed arrangement in which someone sold off his own past. The deeper the lawyer digs, the more he circles his own roots; as a man of mixed heritage in a country that prizes a "proper" lineage, the question of identity is never far from his own skin. An inquiry into a dead stranger slowly turns into a question about the living: can you erase your history and start over behind another face?

Directed by Kei Ishikawa from Keiichiro Hirano's novel, the film stars Satoshi Tsumabuki and Sakura Ando. It swept the Japan Academy Film Prize, including Best Picture, and works through quiet sorrow and precision rather than twists.
