Synopsis
National Theatre Live: Hamlet (2015) is available to watch online on iFILM — a filmed record of Lyndsey Turner's Barbican production, with Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role, directed for screen by Robin Lough.
The prince has no clean move. His father is dead, his uncle holds the throne, and his mother has married the man responsible. Cumberbatch plays Hamlet as someone fracturing in real time — sardonic one moment, undone the next, never settling into the brooding archetype. Ciarán Hinds' Claudius operates with low-key menace; Anastasia Hille's Gertrude carries more agency than the role usually gets. At 217 minutes, the production runs the full text.
Tickets for the Barbican run sold out within hours. The camerawork — close-ups, tight blocking, the sound of the audience — turns a theatre transmission into something cinema rarely manages with Shakespeare. Stream National Theatre Live: Hamlet (2015) on iFILM.
