Severance

Severance (2006) is Christopher Smith's pitch-black British horror comedy, ready to watch online on iFILM. A corporate team-building weekend curdles into a bloodbath deep in a Hungarian forest.

Seven employees of the weapons firm Palisade are packed onto a company coach and shipped off to a luxury lodge somewhere in Eastern Europe to boost morale. A fallen tree blocks the road, the driver storms off after an argument, and the group sets out on foot. The run-down house they stumble on looks nothing like a spa. And out in the dark between the trees, someone is already watching them — someone with a very personal grudge against an arms manufacturer.

Smith works the contrast hard: office bickering, slideshow jokes and corporate jargon slam straight into real bear traps, pit spikes and dismemberment. The cast brings together Danny Dyer, Laura Harris, Toby Stephens and Tim McInnerny. It's built for viewers who like their scares laced with laughs, and who already suspect that a mandatory work retreat is the worst thing that can happen to anyone.
