Synopsis
Love Me or Leave Me (1955) — watch online on iFILM. Charles Vidor directed this musical biopic about jazz singer Ruth Etting, with Doris Day in the lead and James Cagney as the Chicago gangster who built — and controlled — her career.
Etting rose from a dance hall to national fame in the 1920s, backed by Marty Snyder's money and connections. The catch was that Snyder wanted more than a business arrangement. Day plays Etting not as a victim but as someone who learned to work the situation; Cagney makes Snyder oddly sympathetic — a man who genuinely loved someone incapable of loving him back.
