Synopsis
99 Francs (2007) is a French satirical comedy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Jan Kounen and built around a manic lead turn from Jean Dujardin. His character, Octave, writes ad copy and genuinely believes he decides what you'll want to buy tomorrow.
Octave has money, women and cocaine to spare, and no point to any of it. Two things crack him open: an affair with a colleague, Sophie, and a pitch for a yogurt campaign at the dairy conglomerate Madone. So the burnt-out copywriter does the unthinkable. He sets out to torpedo his own ad, sabotaging the machine that made him from the inside.
Adapted from Frédéric Beigbeder's notorious novel, the film matches its source for sheer nerve: strobing edits, price tags painted onto people, several alternate endings stacked one after another. Years before The Artist, this gave Dujardin his most unhinged role. If a poison-tongued, drug-bright takedown of consumer culture sounds like your thing, this one delivers.
