Synopsis
Rubber (2010) is Quentin Dupieux's deadpan horror-comedy you can watch online on iFILM. The lead character is a discarded car tire. It wakes up in the California desert and starts rolling across the sand on its own.
The tire goes by Robert. Somewhere along the road it discovers a telepathic gift — a hard stare, and bottles, birds and eventually people burst apart. From there it's a killing spree with no motive at all. Off to the side, a crowd of spectators watches the whole thing through binoculars, a film audience planted inside the film. Dupieux opens by having a sheriff list famous movies and explain that great cinema happens for "no reason," then builds 82 minutes to prove the point.
Calling it a slasher misses what's going on; it's a prank aimed straight at the viewer, closer to an art stunt than a genre piece. It lands best with fans of absurdist comedy and anyone who enjoys a movie openly mocking its own rules. Stream Rubber (2010) online on iFILM.
