Synopsis
The Remarkable Life of Ibelin (2024) is a Norwegian documentary you can watch online on iFILM. Mats Steen lived with Duchenne muscular dystrophy from childhood, rarely left his wheelchair, and his parents feared he had died lonely and barely known to anyone.
After his death they posted a farewell note on his blog — and replies poured in from strangers across Europe. It turned out that, as the knight Ibelin, Mats had spent a decade living a full life inside World of Warcraft: making friends, falling in love, picking fights, quietly carrying other people through their own troubles. Director Benjamin Ree reconstructed that second life from thousands of pages of game logs and animated it inside the game itself, weaving it together with real footage of the Steen family.
The film took both the Directing Award and the Audience Award in the World Cinema documentary section at Sundance. It's a rare case where a story about an online game turns out far more human than you'd expect, landing even with viewers who don't care about gaming.
