Synopsis
I.Q. (1994) is Fred Schepisi's gentle romantic comedy, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A car mechanic falls for Albert Einstein's niece, and the great physicist decides to play matchmaker. Picture 1950s Princeton, with genius bent toward romance instead of relativity.
Ed fixes engines and knows nothing about equations, but he wins Einstein over the moment he takes the old man for a motorcycle ride. The catch: Catherine is engaged to a stuffy, self-important psychologist and finds Ed sweet but simple. So her uncle and three fellow professors scheme to pass the mechanic off as a genius, feeding him a paper on cold fusion until the whole world believes a new star has arrived. Tim Robbins plays Ed with shaggy charm, Meg Ryan gives Catherine a head that keeps outvoting her heart, and Walter Matthau turns Einstein into a sly, warm troublemaker.
Schepisi made an old-fashioned fairy tale about how love never sits an IQ test. There's no real conflict here, just easy warmth and actors clearly having fun. It's for anyone who misses the cozy, sincere romcoms of the nineties. Stream I.Q. online on iFILM.
