A Dog's Breakfast

A Dog's Breakfast (2007) is a Canadian dark comedy you can watch online on iFILM. David Hewlett wrote it, directed it, and plays Patrick — a man who barely manages ordinary life. When his sister Marilyn brings home her fiancé Ryan, a sci-fi soap opera star, Patrick becomes convinced Ryan is a threat to her. So he sets out to kill Ryan first. Nothing about this plan works.

Kate Hewlett — David's actual sister — plays Marilyn, while Paul McGillion, Christopher Judge and Rachel Luttrell (all Stargate: Atlantis cast members) fill out the ensemble. The film runs on a low budget and a very high level of self-inflicted chaos: every fix Patrick attempts makes his situation measurably worse. Hewlett has a good instinct for the kind of horror-comedy where the audience can see the disaster coming well before the character does.
