Synopsis

The Bookshop (2017) is Isabel Coixet's quiet English drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. In a sleepy seaside town at the close of the 1950s, young widow Florence Green buys a damp old house and turns it into the local bookshop she has always wanted.

The plan looks harmless, yet the town answers with polite smiles that hide a cold calculation. The influential Mrs Gamart wants that same building for an arts centre and quietly pulls every string she has. Florence stocks her shelves with Lolita and Fahrenheit 451, which finishes off whatever goodwill she had left. Her one ally is Mr Brundish, a reclusive widower played by Bill Nighy who barely leaves his house but devours every book she sends him. Emily Mortimer plays Florence; Patricia Clarkson plays her rival.

Adapted from Penelope Fitzgerald's novel, the film took the Goya for Best Film. It is a hushed, faintly bitter story about how a small town can smother an outsider's dream while smiling the whole time. Fans of slow British dramas about books and quiet dignity will find plenty here. Stream The Bookshop (2017) online on iFILM.
