Synopsis

All the while a political storm gathers offscreen, the kind that finally crashes through the house and everyone inside it.
The story unfolds in an unnamed Latin American country, though Chile clearly shadows it, along with the fate of Allende's own relative, President Salvador Allende. Running two and a half hours, the picture rests on its actors, with Streep and Irons aging their characters from youth to ruin.
