Synopsis
Dreamer (2005) is a family drama with Kurt Russell and Dakota Fanning, free to watch online on iFILM. It grew out of the story of an actual racehorse. Ben Crane, a horse trainer with no stable of his own and not much in the bank, brings home a mare with a shattered leg that her owner has already given up on.
His eight-year-old daughter Cale falls for the broken horse on sight and refuses to let anyone put her down. Father and daughter share a house but barely talk, and now they're bound together by one nearly hopeless project: nurse Sonador back to health and, somehow, get her racing again. Young Dakota Fanning carries half the picture, while Russell plays a dad who thaws even slower than the leg heals. Kris Kristofferson turns up as the grandfather, with Elisabeth Shue alongside.
This was the directing debut of John Gatins, the screenwriter behind Flight and Real Steel. The film is soft and easy to predict, yet honest about the thing that matters — a second chance for the horse and for the family both. A solid pick for a gentle night in with the kids.
