Synopsis

The First Beautiful Thing (La prima cosa bella, 2010) is an Italian tragicomedy by Paolo Virzì you can watch online on iFILM. It follows one family from the seaside town of Livorno across three decades, from a sweltering summer in 1971 to the present.

At the center is Anna Michelucci, a radiant young mother crowned "Most Beautiful Mom" at a beachside pageant. The title sets off her husband's jealousy and, with it, years of family chaos. Decades later her grown son Bruno has erased his mother, his hometown and his past. He teaches, hates his job, and clings to a small, gray life on purpose. When his sister Valeria calls him home to say goodbye to the dying Anna, he drags himself back to Livorno. Micaela Ramazzotti and Stefania Sandrelli share the role of Anna across the years; Valerio Mastandrea plays the worn-down Bruno.

This is no weepy illness drama. Virzì builds a warm, sharp-tongued portrait of a woman whose relentless cheer both wounds and rescues the people around her. The film swept the David di Donatello awards and became one of the biggest Italian hits of its year. Stream The First Beautiful Thing (2010) online on iFILM.
