City of Lies

City of Lies (2018) is a crime thriller you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Brad Furman. Johnny Depp plays LAPD detective Russell Poole, a man who has spent half his career on a single case he was never allowed to close: the killings of two of the biggest rappers of the nineties.

The Notorious B.I.G. was shot dead in Los Angeles not long after Tupac Shakur, and no one was ever charged for either. Twenty years on, a reporter named Jack Jackson (Forest Whitaker), desperate for a story that will rescue his name, talks Poole into reopening it. The two pull at the old threads and hit the thing everybody avoided — the trail bends back toward corruption inside the police force itself.

Drawn from Randall Sullivan's book, the film is less about who fired the gun than about how an institution quietly buries an inconvenient investigation. Depp plays against type here: not a showpiece, just a worn, stubborn cop robbed of his life's work, and his back-and-forth with Whitaker holds the whole thing together.
