Synopsis
Broken City (2013) is a crime thriller directed by Allen Hughes — watch it online on iFILM. Mark Wahlberg plays Billy Taggart, a former NYPD cop pushed off the force eight years ago after a shooting that technically cleared him but left the department no choice. Now he works as a cut-rate private investigator, taking whatever cases come his way.
Mayor Nicholas Hostetler, played by Russell Crowe, shows up with a job: find out who his wife Cathleen is seeing. Catherine Zeta-Jones plays Cathleen. It looks like a routine surveillance job until the man Billy was following turns up dead and a major city housing deal starts coming apart at the seams. Billy slowly works out that the mayor had a very specific reason for choosing him.
The film keeps its focus on the mechanics of the double-cross, with Jeffrey Wright and Barry Pepper rounding out the cast. Hughes shoots New York at night and in close quarters, giving the whole thing a compressed, pressure-cooker quality. Stream Broken City (2013) online on iFILM.
