Synopsis
Russian Dolls (Les Poupées russes, 2005) is a French romantic comedy-drama you can watch online on iFILM. Picking up the story from L'Auberge Espagnole, it finds Xavier at thirty, scraping by as a writer and still hopelessly unsure which woman he's actually looking for.
Director Cédric Klapisch reunites his old ensemble and bounces Xavier between Paris, London and Saint Petersburg. Romain Duris returns as the charming commitment-dodger, surrounded by Audrey Tautou, Cécile de France and Kelly Reilly — an old flame, his best friend Isabelle, and Wendy, the English woman who might finally matter. Along the way he ghostwrites a vain model's memoir and ends up at a wedding in Russia, where his tangled love life comes to a head.
The film runs on energy rather than plot: quick cutting, Xavier's running inner monologue, and the very recognizable mess of being thirty and going nowhere. It's for viewers who like talky European cinema about a delayed coming-of-age, ideally after seeing the first chapter. Stream Russian Dolls (2005) online on iFILM.
