Synopsis
The Toxic Avenger (1984) is Troma's splatter horror-comedy, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Co-directed by Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, it became the poster child for everything "so bad it's good."
Melvin Junko is a scrawny, awkward mop-pusher at a health club in the small town of Tromaville. The local bullies pick him for a cruel prank that spins out of control, and he sails out a third-floor window straight into a barrel of toxic waste. Death doesn't take. Instead he mutates, rising from the vat as a hulking, disfigured creature the townsfolk nickname Toxie. The former weakling now has muscle, a melted face and a simple calling: scrub the corruption, thugs and creeps out of his hometown by any messy means necessary.
Running alongside the carnage is a clumsy, oddly sweet romance between Toxie and a blind girl, with gore so over-the-top it plays for laughs rather than scares. The movie spawned a whole fan following, a franchise, a kids' cartoon and even a stage musical, and it put Troma on the cult map for good. You'll know fast if it's your thing: cheap latex, buckets of blood and the punk energy of low-budget 1980s filmmaking. Stream The Toxic Avenger (1984) online on iFILM.
