About

Synopsis

The Dark Half (1993) is George Romero's horror adaptation of the Stephen King novel, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Novelist Thad Beaumont spent years publishing brutal bestsellers under a pen name, George Stark. Once the secret leaks, Thad stages a mock burial for his invented author. Bad idea.

Timothy Hutton pulls double duty as both the gentle, bookish Thad and his cold-blooded alter ego Stark, who flatly refuses to stay dead. A headstone goes up over the fake grave, and soon bodies start turning up nearby, carved up exactly the way Stark's novels describe. The police zero in on Beaumont himself — his fingerprints are all over the scenes. Yet Thad knows the far worse truth about whose hand really holds the razor.

This is one of the more overlooked King adaptations. Romero, the godfather of the zombie film, takes a pure King premise about a buried second self and lets it simmer, leaning on creeping paranoia rather than cheap jolts. Hutton carries both halves on his own, and that performance alone makes it worth digging up. Stream The Dark Half (1993) online on iFILM.
