Synopsis
Inferno (1980) is Dario Argento's Italian horror film, available to watch online on iFILM. Poet Rose discovers an old architect's diary in her New York building and realizes the truth: her home was raised by one of the Three Mothers, ancient witches who rule the world unseen through fear, tears and darkness.
The second chapter of the Mothers trilogy after Suspiria, it moves the nightmare from Rome to a labyrinthine Manhattan apartment house. Rose's brother Mark (Leigh McCloskey) answers her letter and descends into flooded cellars where death waits for anyone who edges too close to the secret. Plot barely matters here. Argento builds the film like a dream, where logic is felt rather than explained.
Its real power is image and sound. Cinematographer Romano Albani drowns the frame in red and cobalt light, and the score comes from Keith Emerson of Emerson, Lake and Palmer instead of Argento's usual Goblin. The underwater room sequence has been studied by genre fans for decades. For anyone who loves giallo and visual horror where beauty outranks answers, this one is essential.
