Synopsis

Temple Grandin (2010) is an HBO biographical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Claire Danes plays the real-life autistic woman who grew up to become one of the world's leading animal scientists.

As a child Temple barely spoke, and doctors urged her family to institutionalize her. Her mother (Julia Ormond) refused. Heading off to college, Temple discovers that her mind simply runs on a different track: she thinks in pictures, catches details everyone else skips, and can't bear loud noise or being touched. Out on her aunt's ranch she sees how panic tortures cattle in the slaughter chutes, and she designs humane handling systems that the livestock industry still relies on today. Her high-school science teacher, played by David Strathairn, is the one who tells her that her strange brain is a gift.

Director Mick Jackson literally puts you behind her eyes, translating her visual thinking into on-screen diagrams and bursts of imagery. Danes disappears into the part without a trace of sentimentality, a performance that took home both an Emmy and a Golden Globe. Honest and genuinely rare in its subject, it's worth watching for anyone who wants to understand autism from the inside out. Stream Temple Grandin online on iFILM.
