Ghost in the Shell 2.0

Ghost in the Shell 2.0 (2008) is Mamoru Oshii's cyberpunk anime, available to watch online on iFILM. This is the reworked edition of the landmark 1995 feature, with several hand-drawn sequences swapped for 3D CGI, a fresh color grade, remixed sound, and partly re-recorded dialogue. The setting holds at the year 2029.

Networks run through everything, cybernetic implants are routine, and a new crime has emerged: the hacking of human minds. Major Motoko Kusanagi, a full-body cyborg working for Section 9 of the public security ministry, hunts an elusive entity called the Puppet Master. The deeper she digs, the harder one question presses on her: where does the machine end and the self begin, when the body is factory-built and a memory can be forged? Atsuko Tanaka and Akio Otsuka return to voice the leads.

This is the film that helped push the Wachowskis toward The Matrix, and it still sets the bar for the genre. The 2.0 cut is a fine reason for longtime fans to revisit it and a reasonable entry point for newcomers, though purists keep arguing over the replaced animation.
